Halloween Countdown Day 18: Scottie's Books Finds!

So last year around this time of year, I went to Scottie's books, a used book store in these here parts, and found a pile of spooky books to share. Well this year, I've done the same thing again!

Scottie's is just a little more overpriced than I prefer in my used books... but I still like going in there, especially if I'm looking for fun genre books like the ones I'm about to share. Overall the average price of the books I picked up was around 1.50.

First up, I went looking for anthologies. This was my main goal in going to Scottie's in the first place. Some of my best Halloween-season readings in the past couple of years have been short story collections, and I want to make sure I have a nice pile to choose from for next year. So I picked up three collections in all. Historical Hauntings edited by Jean Rabe and Martin H. Greenberg. I'll be honest, I am probably the least excited by this one, as it focuses mainly on historical figures and time periods. But it promises some stories of vikings, the Civil War, Iwo Jima, Harry Houdini, Jimmy Hoffa, and Helen Keller... so I'll give it a shot. Next we have Peter Straub's Ghosts which is an anthology edited by Straub but has 13 other contributing authors as well. Peter Straub's story "Pork Pie Hat" is actually a really creepy little Halloween story so I thought I'd give this anthology a try. Finally we have Night Visions: In the Blood which is a weird collection (IMO) in that it is a book eidted by Alan Ryan containing three collections of stories from three different authors, Charles L. Grant, Tanith Lee, and Steve Rasnic Tem. This is the book I'm probably the most curious about out of the three.

This book quite possibly has some of the worst illustrations I have ever seen. I am sorry for being so blunt about it, but I honestly think Napoleon Dynamite may have drawn the pictures for this book. Either way, it was super cheap, and it is a collection of monsters from mythology. So I couldn't leave it behind just based on aesthetics unfortunately.

It wouldn't be a book post without some novelizations and so I picked up these two little gems. The first is Frankenstein: The True Story which turned out NOT to be a novelization but instead the script for the teleplay. So hm. Not sure how I feel about that or if I'll actually read it now. The second is probably one of the more exciting finds of this lot: It Lives Again! which is a novelization of the sequel to the movie "It Lives". It is amazing to me when sequels of obscure horror films get novelizations. It gives me hope for humanity (Not really. Kind of the opposite is true... but I still love this). So many claw-handed babies...

I think my absolute lose-my-s**t moment happened when I found this book however. This is a novelization of not one but TWO of the Nightmare on Elm Street movies together. The Nightmares on Elm Street might not be the most clever title... but I don't love it any less for that. This book incorporates both Part 4: The Dream Master and Part 5: The Dream Child. This makes sense as both of those movies featured Alice as the Final Girl and it follows her out of highschool as a dreamy teen and into her adult life and motherhood. A little disappointing is the fact that the "8 pages of skin-crawling movie photos" only include shots from Part 4, and I would have liked to have seen some shots from Part 5 for sure.

I may be stretching things a bit with this one, but (1.) I always consider pirates a valid part of the Halloween festivities around here and (2.) I couldn't leave this behind, and I didn't want to try to shoehorn it into a different post. So here we are. I find this either hilarious or a little sad because The Druid of Shannara has lettering almost as big as the title, and probably takes up as much space either way. They're really selling the adaptation by TERRY BROOKS more than the movie, Hook.

The final book I brought home I may actually try to read this season before it's too late. Scared Stiff by Jahnna N. Malcolm is one of those cheap-looking Apple Paperbacks from the late 80's to early 90's. This one came out in '91. And it stars a bunch of kids who straight-up have to deal with a walking corpse.

It is probably awful, and if circumstances had played out differently, this would probably have just ended up as one of those filler books for a knock-off Goosebumps-clone-series. But I like the cover art, and the fact that it deals with a real-live dead guy wins my heart. This thing looks like a Ramona book starring a toe-tagged zombie. I can get behind that.

So here's the whole pile I brought home from Scottie's books. If the place is still around again this time next year, I'll go back and do it again. For now though, that's all I have for tonight kids! I'll be back with more Gut-Wrenching Goodwill Goodies soon enough... So until then, Happy Haunting!

Halloween Countdown Day 14: My Birthday!

10 days later and I wasn't even going to bother with posting anything about my birthday because I didn't really get anything Halloween-y for my birthday anyway... Until today. Wanna see what I got? Let's take a look!

Out of the gate we're starting with the non-Halloween-y stuff, of which the MAJOR gift this year was this set of Disney Infinity Marvel: Guardians of the Galaxy figurines! Before anyone asks: No, I do not own the game... or even a system to play it on. But I LOVE Guardians of the Galaxy, and I LOVE the animated-style of these figures. They are simply stunning, and make a great addition to the shrine I am currently building to the GotG.

Slightly more Halloween-y is this Scooby-Doo PEZ set, which I mentioned during my tour of the Halloween aspects of my Geek cave... so I won't go into great detail here again. BUT PEZ + Scooby-Doo = AWESOME!!!

My daughter got me this book The Infinite Sea which is the second book in the 5th Wave series by Rick Yancey. This author is currently one of my favorites and this series is just GUT-wrenching.

This set of TMNT PEZ dispensers was a last minute purchase by my wife the night of my birthday. Again... PEZ + Almost anything = AWESOME.

NOW. The inspiration for this post was the fact that when I arrived home today my wife's cousin gave me this awesome pillow from www.Horrordecor.com the creators of the Horror-Buddies line. This Handbook for the Recently Deceased from Beetlejuice is perfect for the chair in my Geek-Cave!!! Gorgeous AND functional!

The pillow came with a bag of (biohazardous) random goodies as well, including a Betelgeuse business card, a postcard of the Farmer from Motel Hell, a banana Laffy Taffy (which I promptly ate) and my favorite part: a random toy evil-clown head.

My wife greeted me with a late birthday present as well. A "Freddy vs. Jason: Forest of Fear Game" from Neca! She found this for four dollars at Mardens, a local chain of salvage and overstock stores here in Maine. Marden's doesn't always have awesome stuff... but when it does... It's INSANELY awesome stuff. Like this.

Here's a look at the Freddy Krueger pieces from the set. I'm loving all three, but if forced to choose I think the Freddy on the right is my favorite. I like worm-Freddy too, but I'm almost always more of a sucker for the iconic versions of characters vs. some sort of gimmick.

Again, if forced to choose my favorite Jason Voorhees, I would probably go with the Jason on the left this time. Although, the Jason in the middle is carrying Freddy Krueger's head, which is pretty badass in its own right. (I apologize for the crummy photographs throughout the post. Not even gonna make excuses.)

On a side note, another MAJOR birthday gift from my wife was a road-trip to three different Goodwills on the day of my birth, as they give you 25% off your purchase if its your birthday and you have a discount card with Goodwill. So I went on a Goodwill SPREE too.

That's it for tonight kids! I'll be back with some Ghostly Goodwill Goodies soon enough. Until then... Happy Haunting!

Halloween Countdown Day 30: All Finished but the Screamin'

So I'll post some stuff tonight, and then I'll try to get pictures of our Halloween night on here before midnight tomorrow, and that's it! 31 (32 if you count October Eve, which I do) consecutive posts for m countdown! Somehow I seem to stick it out better for October than December, but then I'm also less busy in October. So here's some final stuff:

Meant to share these guys LAST year during my Countdown and I don't think I ever got around to it (can't find them on the blog at any rate) so here they are: a couple of Imperial Godzilla-esque toys! One of these, the purple-y blue one, is genuine vintage and belonged to my brother-in-law when he was a kid, although he has no date markings. The other I have no idea when it was manufactured, but it FEELS a lot newer, even though the date on it says 1986, I know they often don't change these dates when they reuse the molds. In fact, I don't know that these are even really genuinely meant to be Godzilla. I feel like they're more knock-off type "Fraud-zillas" that used to get sold cheaply on the bottom shelves of stores like Kay-Bee toys back when they were still around. I bought the green guy for .99 cents.

Found this interesting deck of "Gypsy Witch" fortune telling cards, which couldn't be less magical if they tried. They have almost nothing to do with anything resembling a Tarot card or any other system, but they're fun in and of themselves... sort of. Paid .99 cents for them. I'm always interested in seemingly random forms of fortune-telling. I don't believe in them exactly, I just find it interesting how people build systems of significance around random systems of numbers and patterns.

Some new additions to the Halloween Cemetary/Village shelf this year. All .99 cents apiece.

Doctor Freddy here is going to need a finger-blade transplant STAT! I plan on using a dremel to hollow out his fingers and then glue in some needles or something to make him the most dangerous toy I own. He was in a .99 cent grab-bag with a BUNCH of other figures, but most notably this lady:

A Queen Alien "wrist-watch" whose tail wraps around your wrist for what I can only imagine is the most AWKWARD watch-wearing experience ever. (The digital display is in her chest, and not visible at this angle). She's gone off to a good home, this little Lady here.

And finally, a set of cardboard coasters I picked up for a Dollar at Target. Not sure what I'll be using these for in years to come, but it sure as heck won't be as coasters. For now, they just sort of decorate the background of one of our Halloween shelves. Love the dapper skull in the top hat the most. I paid 1.00 for the set you see here.

Awww... Fraud-zillas hugging! What a great way to put the last nail in the coffin-lid of October! I know there's one more post to come, but let's face it, I'm practically dying of some sort of super-flu and I will barely be coherent after a night of chasing my kids around Trick-or-treating... so this may be the last legible sentiment on the blog for some time. I will definitely be taking a little blog break come November, but not for long, because PEOPLE... the packages from friends have been coming in, and I have stuff it would be downright RUDE not to blog about! Stuff from folks like Eric Stettmeier of Toyriffic, Miss M of Diary of a Dorkette, and CRPechonick of Geek Show Ink! So you do have that to look forward to!

Something's Coming By: Virginia Kroll

Smell of smoke from wood-burning stoves,
ripe red apples, crushed black cloves,
crunchy leaves of brown and gold,
pumpkins bigger than I can hold,
spookiest masks I've ever seen--
something's coming--
HALLOWEEN!

That's it for me tonight kids! I'll be back soon with more Gangrenous Goodwill Goodies! Until then, Happy Haunting!

The League of Extraordinary Bloggers: What a Nightmare!

Well it's League of Extraordinary Bloggers time once again! Seems like I just did one of these... doesn't it?

league-nightmares

Last week the topic was "I Have a Dream..." so of course what are we following up with?

When I think of nightmares... I think of my childhood in the 80's. I remember vividly as a young scamp being allowed to be "around" when my mom and my aunt were watching horror movies. Weird thing is, the would choose all hours of the day to do this. They would watch movies like Nightmare on Elm Street at noon in the summer time. And unless I wanted to be locked outdoors I was usually either watching too, or off in another room still able to hear the horrific action. I was exposed to SO many inappropriately terrifying movies as a child. I think I'll run down the list of the most traumatizing moments I was exposed to and then at the very end of this post I will detail to you the most memorable, vivid, and terrifying nightmare I had as a ten year old child. I still remember almost every detail of it to THIS DAY.

So here are just some of the images that fueled my nightmare factory as a child.

1-a. The Stretchy Arms Scene from Nightmare on Elm Street Pt. 1

There wasn't much that didn't upset me about Nightmare actually. But this scene and a couple of others really stood out. Looking at the effects they use in this scene nowadays just kind of makes me cringe in an embarrassed way... but back when I was a kid this was just mind-numbingly horrifying. The first movie had very little on-purpose camp to it. It was deathly serious and used dream-logic to scare the audience, not to make wry puns or slapstick kills. Watching this shadow man's arms reach out and out and OUT just made me feel like there was nowhere I could possibly safe.

A spring! A spring! A marvelous thing! Everyone knows it's Slinky!

1b. ANY scene with Tina in a body bag in Nightmare on Elm Street.

This is the only time I will be dedicating a whole entry in this list to a different scene from the same movie. But dammit I NEED this one to be singled out on here! Any time Nancy would dream of Tina after she is brutally (and TERRIFYINGLY I might add...) murdered by Freddy, she's in her body bag... either soaked in blood... or pale and spitting up centipedes. A girl's gotta have options... I guess? Seeing Tina zipped up in a giant plastic bag in various states of death and distress was extremely mind-altering for me.

2. The Faceless Bounty Hunters from Critters

I personally think it's ironic that in this movie about carnivorous aliens the pseudo-heroes are the things that disturbed me the most as a kid. These guys are only faceless for a very short while... But It's that weird, pale, wet smoothness that just gets under my skin. There's this terrible sense of foreboding to them until they get their disguises on a short while later. It really climbed into my brain in a real way too, as I will explain later.

Do NOT poke these dough boys in the belly.

3. The Chatterer from Hellraiser.

This guy is just a mess. Hellraiser was a sickeningly disturbing movie for me to glimpse as a child. I get that my mom was pretty progressive in letting me watch whatever I felt like I could handle... but I should never have glimpsed even an IMAGE from this film at that age. There are a good half-dozen moments, creatures, kills, visuals, etc. that I had stuck in my head for a long while after. Chubby cenobite Butterball is no child's fantasy of warmth and comfort and Skinless Uncle Frank running through the house, bleeding through all his outfits was distressing as well. But the Chatterer takes the cake. He's disturbing in the way the bounty hunters above are, in that weird, amorphous fleshy way... but turned up to 11. With the lips peeled back and the teeth clicking away... ugh. The Chatterer is the reason why characters like the fluke man from the X-Files and the Master from Buffy the Vampire Slayer have been some of my favorites.

"You have Kool-Aid mouth."

4. "Fluffy" the Crate monster from Creepshow

Again, Creepshow is another movie that I clearly remember about a DOZEN disturbing moments from. The Caaaaake! Drowned, blue Ted Dansen coming back as a water-logged zombie... Steve King blowing off his head when he's covered in alien vegetation... All deeply traumatizing. But this terrifying ape-like creature from the crate under the stairs just absolutely wrecked me. I think the fact that he goes unseen for a good portion of the story is what really got me. He kind of embodies the nebulous threats that come from places like the closet or under the bed. And the fact that he was dragging full-grown adults kicking and screaming into his little hidey-hole just made it that much more horrifying. I was forced to go and play outside for large portions of this film (which was even more terrifying BY MYSELF in rural Maine...) because I kept jumping up off the couch and screaming my fool head off.

"I am the one hiding under your stairs...
fingers like snakes and spiders in my hair!"

5. Whatever the F**K this guy is from From Beyond.

I have never gone back and watched From Beyond as an adult. I remember it being so deeply mind-altering to me as a child that I have never been able to bring myself to do it. And I LOVE HORROR MOVIES! (In fact most of the movies I take scenes from on this list are favorites of mine as an adult) I remember a LOT of body horror, a LOT-LOT of skull-tentacles... and a LOT-LOT-LOT of smeary-faced people eating parts of other people. This movie makes a barbecue rib eating contest look like tea with the Queen. I didn't know what it was (still don't!) that had gotten inside that guy's head to poke that weird feeler out... but I knew it made me desperately uncomfortable. (Another one that I always get confused with this is "Brain Damage" which has a lot of horrible imagery in line with this film as well...)

Nope.
Just no.

6. Almost EVERYTHING from Night of the Creeps... but if I had to pick one: This guy.

Yeah, Night of the Creeps was just wrong on so many levels. As a kid I knew that leeches infesting your brain until they made your head explode was a bad thing. The fact that as a side-effect they zombify whatever bodies they've infested, be they living or long, long dead... just made it all so much worse. This is the reanimated corpse of a serial ax-murderer who was himself murdered 20 years or so before the story takes place in the film. He spiced things up a bit, that's for sure. Zombies terrified me from a very young age anyway, and this guy did nothing to help that.

A zombie with an ax and alien leeches in its brain.
Not overkill at all.

7. The face-peeling scene from Poltergeist.

Everyone always seems to remember the clown and killer tree scenes from poltergeist. Me? All I remember is the guy from the paranormal investigative crew who has the vision of himself tearing off his own face. Well... that and the slimy skeletons popping up in the muddy pool-hole. That was pretty messed up too. But watching this guy strip off his face like the skin off the back of a Thanksgiving Turkey will ALWAYS stay with me.

Damn. Now I just want turkey.

8. Again... a LOT of stuff from the Prince of Darkness... but forced to choose: This chick.

Yeah... she nasty. There were so many new concepts to learn about from this movie! Possession by demonic forces for one. The scenes where this scabby-faced woman would reach into mirrors and enter a murky, dark-water-filled realm that imprisoned the Prince of Darkness also freaked me deeply. It's honestly one of the reasons why I have such a hard time going swimming in the local lakes and ponds around here. All I can picture is some eczema victim reaching her crusty hand in and pulling out a monster. The whole movie deals in disturbing concepts. People being devoured internally by bugs while they talk in creepy voices... The big black guy singing as he stumbles around... Even just watching people getting squirted with the evil fluid from the big green tube was scary.

That stuff sure wasn't Oil of Olay.

9. The closet monster from HOUSE.

It was partly the same reason that "Fluffy" from Creepshow above freaked me out... same kind of "monster from the unknown" concept... but then look at this thing. Part of it was that you knew this creature brought madness with it when it came out that door. I understood that it was defying logic whenever it showed up. That closet was normal one moment... and then it contained this slimy green mess of sinew and bone and teeth and snot, all asymmetrical and insane the next. It represents the polar opposite of everything children take comfort in. I heard more of this movie from the upstairs of my house than I actually saw... but seeing this guy and the big fat-lady monster was enough to send me squealing from the room more than once.

Not the be confused with Mike Wazowski.
Different department at Pixar.

10. Big-Mouth Amy the vampire from Fright Night.

I look at the effects from the end sequence of the 80's Fright Night film these days and I'm forced to chuckle. But back when I was a kid? Seeing Amy in this state sent me over the edge. I felt like I was going to fall completely into her bottomless, gaping maw if I just leaned too close to the TV. I remember my mother, frustrated, explaining to me that it was actually just a "dark comedy" over and over again and that I just needed to calm down. I didn't see the difference. I didn't see the "dark comedy" difference when we went to see "An American Werewolf in London" at the drive-in either. My reaction to Fright Night got me banned from watching almost all of "Vamp" when she rented that.

"Black Hole Sun... won't you come..."

So there are my 10 most emotionally disturbing horror movie memories from childhood. Or whatever. Now what that was all leading up to was this:

The Worst Nightmare I Have Ever Had

I was around 10 years old and I was spending the summer with my grandmother in North Carolina. I was playing with my action figures in her upstairs hallway. I can see myself sitting on the floor up there, just totally oblivious to anything else in the world. I am looking down at myself from the top corner of the room... like an out-of-body experience or whatever. What I can see from my vantage point up by the ceiling, and that the other me playing on the floor can't is that the door to my grandmother's bedroom is slowly sliding open behind me. The room is pitch black. And then a figure steps out of the doorway, very slowly and into the hall behind me. The figure is clothed in all black. A solid black body suit. It reminds me of the cenobite gear from Hellraiser. But the head and face are completely blank like the faces of the bounty hunters in Critters. I want to warn myself that someone is there, but I can't make myself talk to the me on the floor to tell him. I am trying desperately to move, to reach out... to do anything. I watch in mute, growing horror as the me on the floor slowly stands up. The faceless man hasn't moved from the spot just outside my grandmother's bedroom door. He doesn't move at all. The me that was playing on the floor is now standing, and turning around slowly. The faceless man moves now, but only to step to the side. He's letting the other me walk slowly past him into the dark bedroom. I disappear into the darkness. I'm still watching all this from the corner of the ceiling. Then the man seems to look up at me there by the ceiling, and then he follows the other me into the dark, and slowly shuts the door. As the door shuts, I am suddenly slammed into my body... the one that is now in the darkness with the faceless man. And I start to scream.

That was when I woke up.

Let's see what's disturbing the slumber of the other League Members shall we?

- Chrisloc over at Random Nerdness had a similar idea for his nightmare post, as he recounts some of the move moments he remembers as a kid that gave him nightmares!

- Ashley at Life With Fandom recalls a vivid nightmare involving a Russian invasion!

- G.I. Jigsaw lived out a real-life nightmare!!!

That's it for me today kids! Come back soon because I'll be showing off some Geeky Goodwill Goodness! Until then, Happy Hunting!

Another Trip to the Brewer ME Goodwill

So, my usual stomping grounds are contained within the Ellsworth, Maine Goodwill. I'm there usually once a week at the very least. But occasionally I get to range out to one of the other Goodwills within about an hour's drive from my home and I almost always find some good stuff on these field trips.

So on Friday, when we took our kids to an indoor bounce-house fun-tertainment facility called "The Maine Jump" in Bangor, I managed to squeeze a quick trip to the Brewer Goodwill, which is on the way. (We went to the Bangor store on Sunday, but I'll post more on that trip another day).

My trip to Brewer did not disappoint. Since there are ALWAYS BOOKS I'll start with those:

These things are my crack.
First up, a couple of Little Golden Books. I picked up The Golden Egg Book because I am always on the hunt for Holiday books for my kids (and it was a nice way to fluff out my LGB collection). I don't even really think it's that old of a book. But Holiday books usually get into the club, old or not. By far the coolest of the duo is Muppet Treasure Island which is exactly what it seems to be: an adaptation of the movie. I am apparently turning into a full-blown Little Golden Books fiend. More on this at another date. Both of these books cost me .99 cents.

This thing is my porn.
Next up I found the novelization of the 1989 Tim Burton Batman film. I owned this book back then, and seeing it made me deliriously happy. I can't even tell you how much nostalgia this brings back. Even just flipping through to look at the chapter headers brought back memories. If I'd found a cassette of the soundtrack to go along with it I might have needed to excuse myself to the bathroom. This book was .99 cents.

This thing is my... other... bad... habit.
I think the book that had me the absolute MOST excited was this one however... even with the hallucinogenic properties of the nostalgia bomb from the Batman novelization THIS book just screamed I"M YOUR BOYFRIEND NOW NANCY!!! HAHAHAHA!!! Which meant a lot, even if my name is not Nancy.

That sounded better in my head.

Anyway, once you get past the neon orange and green cover, and the obvious fact that this is "New Nightmare" Freddy (the weird organic bladed glove gives it away)... you slowly begin to realize that they put out a Goosebumps style series of novels that isn't even a hackneyed attempt to simply repurpose the scripts from "Freddy's Nightmares: The Nightmare on Elm Street Series". A quick Google search turned up 5 (!) more books in the series. I'm beginning to think I may need them all. "How's the writing?" you may ask? Well it's not great to be honest, and I flipped to the ending to see if my suspicions were correct... and they were. The pretty much find a tenuous and bizarrely illogical way of tying the story to Freddy Krueger. And that's... okay! He also serves as Crypt-Keeper, introducing the tale, and wrapping things up for us at the end. I paid .99 cents for this kitschy masterpiece.

Next up I have this pillowcase featuring Sesame Street. Regular readers of this blog will already know that I am obsessed with Sesame Street. And FYI I pretty much plan on letting my youngest son use this on his bed because I've given him the Sesame Street Fever. This one was a last minute purchase because the woman in line in front of me actually had it in her cart and she changed her mind and handed it to the cashier to return. I asked if I could see it, and immediately added it to my pile for another .99 cents. Why?

Because Roosevelt Franklin. See that kid driving the bus? That's this muppet:

I. Love. Roosevelt Franklin. He stopped making regular appearances on Sesame Street 3 years before I was born but he still made occasional appearances and they still showed some of his sketches later. The more I learn about him later in life, the more I want to see him come back.

He was intended to be a role-model for young black inner city kids. Unfortunately some critics of the character either felt he was an insultingly over-the-top negative racial stereotype, while others felt he was too "white-washed" and watered down to truly represent kids of color. Personally I think it's a shame that an effort to make a black character to help empower black kids got stomped out by a bunch of critics. And wow... I spent waaay too much time talking about this pillowcase. Basically it boils down this way: If it's got Roosevelt Franklin in or on it, I'm buying it.

Sharp Tooth! I picked up this old Pizza Hut puppet from The Land Before Time for .99 cents. Remember these? I took two pictures because I wanted one that really showcase the puppet (the one on the right) but then I had one shot I took completely by accident that I felt really made his menace come to the forefront (the one on the left... can't you just imagine that face staring in your window at you?)

Apparently THIS is the new monkey on my back.

I also paid .99 cents for this G.I.Joe lunchbox from 1989. This I got pretty excited about too. I am trying desperately to NOT collect lunchboxes... but then there's this. I own this now. It's in the cave. Taking up space. I have a vintage lunchbox now. I'm hyperventilating a little bit and I don't know if it's from excitement or fear. Someone help me.

Here's a shot of the whole haul! Every item you see here cost me .99 cents. These were great, but not even the greatest of the weekend.

I'll be back soon with even more Geeky Goodwill Goodies (from this same weekend)! Until then Happy Hunting!
