Payday Friday!

So here are the spoils of a payday Friday past... the payday Friday of August 30th to be precise... I went in expecting very little... And actually came out with some pretty great finds!

Not sure what I'm going to do with this. It's a Fisher-Price Grand Piano from 1986. It doesn't really fit my collection... but I couldn't leave it there! It only has a bit of mild damage on the top right corner of the front decal. The rest looks great! Still works perfectly with these little colored tiles popping up after each key is struck, with notes like "do" "re" "mi" and little animal faces printed on them. I actually have a pretty good idea of where this will probably end up already... hmmm.

Got this grab-bag for .99 cents! I'm not even a little bit excited about Jane from Tarzan, honestly (sorry Jane, you don't even have your parasol with a monkey on it. Maybe if you did... but you don't) I bought this bag for the other 3 items. This will mark my (if memory serves) first ever Bugs Life toy. Little Princess Dot is a cereal premium from 1998. Her paint apps are not great, but she's cute, and she is now enjoying a spot on the shelf next to my other Pixar characters. I also found one of those pretty-new Despicable Me 2 Minion Happy Meal toys! One I didn't have already! And he's a slide whistle! Since I refuse to put my mouth on a second-hand kids toy I will simply have to trust he still works. And I finally came up with a new robot to add to my robot collection! Look at that cute little "Galaxy" guy! 

The reason I always scan the glass wares aisle! Collectible fast food glasses! Ronald there on the right I have been hoping to spot for a while! Used to be a few years back that you couldn't throw a rock around here at a thrift store or antique shop without shattering just a whole collection of these McDonald's character glasses. Now they've become collectible and I see them NOWHERE. These and the two Muppets glasses I found there awhile back just make me feel justified in sweeping down this section every time I visit. Now... the Jack in the Box Hamburgers glass... is a creature of a different nature. I had no knowledge of this glass and it's collectibility when I bought it. We don't have any Jack in the Box restaurants around here, so I've never seen these around. There's a big Coca-Cola logo on the opposite side. Still can't any kind of idea from the internet how old it might be... but I don't really care. I like it. I bought these 2 glasses for .99 cents apiece.  

Yet another Simpsons comics collection! I've really accumulated a stack of these at this point. This makes the seventh tpb collection I've picked up at Goodwill! Maybe someday I'll actually sit down and... like... read them. .99 cents for this book! 

I am a sucker for interesting-looking travel books. so Ron Butler's "Dancing Alone in Mexico: From the Border to Baja and Beyond" looked like a quirk and interesting read. I've really tried to slow down on buying stacks and stacks of random books, but this one called out to me. I paid 1.99 for it

Next up are probably the two most exciting finds of the whole Payday Friday for a geek like me! These are a pair of old Invicible Overlord role-playing supplements from the late eighties (1988-1989). I bought them when I was at the height of my role-playing FEVER in the early 90's at the Ellsworth All-For-A-Dollar. There were three of them that I found back then, and there were actually three of them that I saw at Goodwill the day I picked these up. The third supplement was called "The Haunt" and it is the only one of the three that I still own to this day. I don't have the box anymore, however. I thought about buying the other copy of the Haunt from Goodwill, but with a 2.99 price tag on each one, I just couldn't afford it. So I brought home the two I was missing. Here's a picture of what the Briarwood Castle looks like on the inside:

Raiders of Ironrock looks pretty much the same, hence no picture included. Pretty standard fare for a role-playing game supplement. These are seamlessly adaptable to the AD&D 2nd edition system, so no core rule book required as long as you have the official AD&D stuff on hand. I couldn't begin to tell you if they are fun to play, but I know I was pleased as punch to find some old roleplaying game sets from when I was younger. 

Aaaaaand finally, this guy. I'm cheating a little bit here, as I actually picked this up on Saturday. I picked it up and looked at it on Friday and then for some incomprehensible reason I PUT IT BACK. It's a Sesame Street train with Big Bird driving! How could I not snap that up for .99 cents? I think I tried reasoning that it was a little too big for me to sensibly display (and it is... I still don't have a "spot" for it...) and so I set it down and bought my stuff... and went home. Then I went to Laura Huey's Boo Booby Blog, THAT NIGHT and saw that she had the EXACT SAME Big Bird Train on display at her house! And I WANTED IT SO BADLY. I even bemoaned this fact on her blog, that I had held this item in my hands and then put it back without buying it! She of course did the sensible thing and scolded me for not having picked it up. SOOOOO... I went back Saturday morning and bought it. I'm nothing if not obsessive. Turns out there's two other cars to the train, one with Cookie Monster, and one with Bert! Neither were in attendance at Goodwill, but I will be keeping my eyes peeled from now on.

Pneumonia.

So I'm officially home for the next two days because I need to rest and recover from PNEUMONIA!!! I have pills and everything. Apparently my little cold has turned into a sinus infection and is dripping vile fluids into my lungs. Had to go get an x-ray and everything. Internet: PITY ME.

I'm looking at this as a positive as it will give me time to work on the blog... and maybe be healthy enough to take my lovely wife out for her birthday Sunday night. Either way I'll be catching up on my day-time television.

Who can take a Saturday and change it into fun? The Trash Man Can...

So I'm sitting in my Cave one Saturday morning, just minding my own business when my wife hands me a package that came for me in the mail! Turns out it was from my good friend the Trash Man over at Pop Pop! It's Trash Culture, and I was about to have the best Saturday morning since I was a kid in pajamas munching Cap'n Crunch and watching Muppet Babies!

Upon opening the pack I discovered this pile of loot! Now, I have just recently WON a GIGANTIC pile of loot from the Trash Man in his monthly Trash giveaway. So I was scratching my head at WHY I would be receiving another one so soon... and then it dawned on me... this was a consolation prize! See, Trash Man sends out BIG prize packs, and then he sends out smaller ones to the losers each month. I may have won the very first one, but I LOST the second one (Yeah, I had the audacity to enter into the next month's drawing... Don't judge me. These prize packs are SOFA KING amazing). So I went about my business, and forgot about the whole thing. UNTIL this showed up! 

See, the cool thing about the Trash Man is he PAYS ATTENTION. He knows all my weaknesses. He remembered how much I WIGGED OUT about the Lantern rings he sent me last time, so he tossed a few more my way this time. And believe me, I verbally, audibly, and EMPHATICALLY shrieked like a teenage Beatles fan of the female persuasion (you know, the kind-of-homely-but-kind-of-hot-too ones with the horn-rimmed glasses that probably ended up being your Aunt or something?) when I saw these. GODS I LOVE THESE!!! I have all of them but 3 now, and I will be tracking those down post-haste! 

MUSCLE guys!!! When I was a kid I thought the guy on the left was supposed to be a mummy, so he attacked people with bandages. The guy in the middle was pretty much just Ice Man. And the guy on the right looked like a pepper grinder to me, so he would puff clouds of irritating pepper at people, blinding and burning them while he fought. I was such a MUSCLE nut!!! This brings my current collection up to 26! I miss having these so much. 

Here are a pair of Garbage Pail Kids wax packs that I refuse to open. I love them just the way they are! They bring back such great childhood memories. Some of the happiest times of my young life were the walks I used to take down to the store to pick up these wax-packs. I am so incredibly thankful for these. 

Finally, there was another of my collecting staples: A Choose Your Own Adventure book! "The Forbidden Castle" which is another perfect addition to my shelf. Long-time readers will remember that next to only maybe Little Golden Books, CYOAs are my favorite kind of books to collect. And Trash Man remembers that. Trash Man is the king of KNOWING what you like. This package I received was incredibly generous and tailor-suited for me. 

Thank you Trash Man, this package was really special to me, and it made my day.

Boxsome Part 2!!!

It's been a while since I've talked about Boxsome on here... in fact it was back in May. Back then I GUSHED about the contents of the package that I had ordered from Tommy and I revealed at the end of the post that I had already ordered MORE. 

Well, it's been a LOOONG while since that package arrived, and I have been planning for a while to post what was included. So... here you are! 

Last time I was a bit more curious about some of the more weird and obscure wax-packs up for offer... but this time I knew exactly what I wanted. I ordered two Boxsome packs that each had an ALF wax-pack and a Dinosaurs Attack! wax-pack included. 

That's right. I ordered two of the exact same Boxsome packs. Essentially, I could have just ordered one with two ALF wax-packs, and one with two Dinosaurs ones... but what's the fun in that? 

Here's my first pack opened. And boy are there some great extras included! As always, there's a pizza point! Also included are some great properties like Howard the Duck, Gremlins, ALF, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and Return of the Jedi. There are some Darkwing Stickers, and the obligatory Pongs. There's also a pack of those AWESOME California Raisins World Tour stickers that I GUSHED about last time! 

First up is the ALF pack. I owned a copy of ever single card pictured here as a kid. I didn't really appreciate them all back then, but man do I love them now! The four photo cards from the show take me back! The sticker is great too, and out of these wax packs as a kid, I was almost as excited for those as the Bouillabaseball cards!!! But not quite. In my youthful mind, those fictitious sports cards were on par with Garbage Pail Kids. They were the whole reason I bought ALF cards at all. 

More awesome Dinosaurs Attack! cards. Nothing super special to report here, I needed almost ever single one of these for my own personal collection, so that was pretty cool. I do want to repeat again how much I love these completely disgusting and horribly inappropriate pictures of terrible things being done to people by dinosaurs in ridiculous ways. 

And then I cracked open those sweet California Raisins World Tour stickers and got Poland, Scotland, Spain, Argentina, and Russia! Each one has a ridiculously cheesy pun, riddle, or joke on it. Love these!

All right! On to pack number two! Another great mix of extra cards here, with more appearances by Gremlins, Return of the Jedi, and TMNT. There's a Batman card and a Mario/Donkey Kong card in the mix this time! Plus: PONGS! There's a nice custom Boxsome sticker included in this pack as well. 

So here's another pack of Dinosaurs Attack! to check out... and what's this? I was shorted a card!!! Not the fault of Boxsome, fortunately. This was a Topps error all the way. Luckily I didn't have any of these yet either. 

In my ALF cards, I received a bunch of less familiar-looking cards. The sticker I remember vividly, and the Bouillabaseball card is, as always, the desert!!! Gods how I love them!

And what is this? In addition to the two Boxsome packages, there was a loose pack of U.S. of ALF "super stickers" included as well. These were obviously cut from the exact same cloth as the California Raisin sticker cards above and the sense of humor is exactly the same... SO I LOVE THEM. It was also really cool to receive them as a free gift with my order!

I want to end this post by saying EXACTLY what I had to say last time:

"All in all, I can't recommend Boxsome ENOUGH. If you were a card-collector in the mid-to-late 80's you will find a GOLD MINE on Boxsome. PLEASE for your own good, go check it out. The prices are incredibly reasonable, and the packs are such a random load of fun that you will have absolutely ZERO buyer's remorse."

Because I feel it still holds completely true. Thanks again to Tommy Day for running such an awesome service over there at Boxsome!

Another Trip to Dream Catchers

I recently made another trip into the Dream Catcher Antique Mall in Ellsworth, ME. And this time I found a handful of great old books, and a fun action figure find! I brought my handful of stuff up to the desk and the guy looks at what I have and just says:

"...Eh... Ten bucks for everything there."

I was prettyy happy because at least two of the items I had were marked at 4 dollars apiece. The other three things had no price, but I had assumed they would be priced similarly... so pretty much everything you see in this post cost me 2 bucks. I literally smiled, handed over a ten dollar bill, thanked the man, and took all this stuff home with me.

Ah. I finally found the second part of this novelization trilogy. It's been driving me nuts for a while now that I only have the first and third parts... and once I got this home I was able to slide this book in between those two on the shelf and let out a satisfied sigh. THIS is the reason why I collect stuff people. Just the rote lining up of things that need to be ordered and in complete sets. Aaaaand... because I like the stuff sometimes? I definitely love the first trilogy, and as I've mentioned recently, I'm getting a strange kick out of collecting movie novelizations now that I've found so many of them at Goodwill. 

Whoah... What? Little Golden Books? Whaaaaaaat? Yep. I'm sure regular visitors will already be annoyingly familiar with the fact that I collect these. What makes these ones particularly special though? This is a first edition Walt Disney's Davy Crockett: King of the Wild Frontier! printed back in 1955 this book has that nice, brownish-gold ink on the gilded spine. I mean, it's not like it's worth much. I think the most it's going for on eBay is about 20 dollars. But still! This is a classic! And the older I find these books, the better. 

Here is a first edition Walt Disney's Donald Duck's Christmas Tree LGB from 1954! What I find really interesting is that Donald is chosen to replace Mickey Mouse, who co-starred in the original animated version of the tale "Pluto's Christmas Tree" two years prior. Nowhere can I seem to find any reference as to WHY that is. Donald is usually portrayed as the Chipmunks' nemesis... and Pluto is always depicted as Mickey's dog... so this is just all very confusing to me. 

I don't know if you are familiar at all with this fairy tale (which is admittedly a Christian parable more than anything... but it reads like a fairy tale) by John Ruskin, but it was one of my favorite stories to have read to me by my grandmother as a little boy. I found this copy that was published in 1932 by McLoughlin Brothers Inc. marked for 4 dollars (but remember I paid 10 for EVERYTHING you see here... so I really got it for 2!) It's pretty much a kind of boy-Cinderella story where a boy named Gluck is being used as a house-keeping slave by his two evil older brothers. Gluck meets a mysterious magical benefactor in the King of the Golden river, who gives Gluck magical instructions on how to gain access to Treasure Valley. Of course, the evil older brothers find out, try to follow the instructions in their own crooked evil ways, fail tests of their moral fiber, and each in their turn are transformed into black stones for their troubles. Gluck wins out in the end, and all thanks to the magic of the King of the Golden River, and his own pure heart. Also, the illustrations by G. A. Davis are super cool, and just seeing them took me back to my childhood. I'd only ever seen this story printed in anthologies of other fairy tales, so finding it published in a single-story format was extremely exciting for me!

I think the absolute BEST find of this particular trip was this Michael Knight action figure from 1982! (Sorry for the terrible pictures... he seemed to be really difficult for me to photograph...)

So sad.

Michael is articulated to pretty much just do ONE thing, and that is sit in a big plastic KITT car and drive around. Sigh. Unfortunately... there was no KITT to be found at the Dream Catcher Antique Mall. So... Michael will just have to go without. 

You're... mocking me, aren't you.

Until I remembered this! I found this KITT at Wal-Mart on clearance down from 4.97 to 3.50! It's... well, it's not quite what Michael needs to make him feel complete... but It makes ME happy!

This was a pretty great handful of items for me to bring home for only 10 dollars! Overall, this was a great trip to the Dream Catcher Antique Mall as well, and I've already spotted some other, more expensive items that I may be picking up in the future if they're still there.

Catching up with the Goodwill Geek

You know, I never take time to just get on here and just... like... talk about stuff. I have a lot of blogging friends who focus their blogs on all aspects of their lives, not just the junk they buy in the course of a month.

I know. It's shocking.
But stay with me.

I thought I'd give it a try. But... if I'm not going to be blogging about the crap I've bought and brought home from Goodwill... or Mardens... or Dream Catcher Antiques... or some other store... I thought I'd take a post to talk about some of the stuff I've been doing, some of the stuff I watched/read/listened to in August, etc. I think I might try to make it an-end-or-maybe-the-beginning-of-every-month kind of thing from now on.

So here goes. Don't expect content any deeper than "Guess what I bought!" by any means.

I've just finished reading Sex Drugs and Cocoa Puffs by Chuck Klosterman. It's a collection of essays on pop-culture, and some of them border on enlightening. It's been slow going for a number of reasons. I don't get as much time to sit down with a book as I used to for one. But for another, I have a hard time buying Klosterman's tone in many of his essays. In so many of his pieces he derides egotistical hipster high-brows for poo-pooing on certain subcultures... but it really just comes off as a hipster (who considers himself above the other hipsters) pointing at a bunch of hipsters and going: "Don't you just hate those guys?" BUT I did especially like the essays he wrote on The Sims, Pamela Anderson, Breakfast Cereal, Serial Killers, Saved By the Bell, and I especially love the parallels he draws between The Empire Strikes Back and Reality Bites (He postulates that they are essentially the same film).

I finally got around to watching Paolo Sorrentino's "This Must Be the Place". It stars Sean Penn as Cheyenne, an aging emo rocker who I imagine MUST be modeled after Robert Smith. I really, really like almost everything about this film. It has the road-trip element that so many of my favorite films do, and also the outsider/misfit as protagonist that covers the rest of my favorite films. I think my main complaint about the film has to be that Penn's portrayal of Cheyenne occasionally just seems impossibly unreal. He completely OWNS the character, but it's so hard to imagine this flesh-and-blood Muppet of a man existing and interacting with other human beings. It's obvious he's supposed to resemble the aforementioned Smith, but elements of another aging rocker: drug-addled, wife-dependent Ozzy Osborne bleeds in there as well. It's a coming of age journey story for men with Peter Pan syndrome, and it uses a Nazi war criminal angle to get there. So much emphasis is put on Cheyenne and his interacting with the world that the Nazi angle didn't feel especially important. It was more an ends to a means that could have been almost anything else as long as it got the ball rolling. Overall I really liked the film though. I liked the pacing and the character development, and the little vignettes that get us from point A to point B. I'll be watching it again sometime in the future for sure.

In other news, my daughter is obsessed with doing make-up FX work. She's been watching SyFy's Face-Off with her grandmother since last year sometime, and now she's been experimenting on herself. I've been doing all I can to encourage her. Above you can see a number of her experiments. I hope she sticks with it because she has a lot of natural talent and she's just starting out at 13. I could see her making a career of this. She'll randomly poke her head into my Geek Cave and look at me with one eye (because the other one is apparently torn from its socket) and ask me to take some pictures for her. She's having fun and she's being geeky and I couldn't be more proud. 

Finally, I've been listening to a handful of podcasts lately, and I wanted to highlight a handful that I've been enjoying. 

Nerd Lunch Podcast

The Nerd Lunch Podcast just recently hit its 100th episode. They're a trio of guys, CT, Pax, and Jeeg who discuss everything in the interest of "nerds" although in my opinion, I really think it's more of a "geek" show than a "nerd" one. They cover topics ranging from fast food, movies, comics, classic geek books, and "other" stuff. It's the "other" stuff where the magic happens... like deciding who the "Expendables" of other movie genres would be. Or what foods you'd choose if your replicators on the Enterprise were broken and you could only have 10 choices for the next several decades. The thing I love most about this podcast is the pseudo-professionalism balanced with fun... meaning, the guys have a great time but take their topics seriously. They don't meander off topic the way a lot of pod-casts do, and while the occasional swear can be heard, for the most part the guys treat their listeners with respect. While I have no problems with profanity when I'm disciplining my kids*, I hate foul-mouthed podcasts that just wander all over the map when what I really want to hear about is what horror movie icons are going to bite it first during a zombie apocalypse.

Stuck in the 80's Podcast

Stuck in the 80's is a podcast that I just recently discovered. Like as in I've only heard about 3 episodes. But I'm hooked already! they mainly talk about 80's music that I can see, with a healthy smattering of 80's films mixed in. These guys were a little bit older during the 80's than I was... but it's all still pretty relevant stuff to me. And like the Nerd Lunch podcast above, these guys stay on topic and have fun while taking their topics seriously.

Thrift Store Movie Score Podcast

The Thrift Store Movie Score is another podcast I discovered recently. It's... interesting. There's none of the polish you see in the above two podcasts. The hosts Justin and Christine tend to be a bit... distracted from time to time, but they have a certain kind of goofy charm. They mostly talk about goofy VHS films they've found in thrift stores. They go into great depths analyzing the plots of the films they've watched, and pull in pop-culture references from their own past experiences. Again, it's not super polished, so a lot of times it feels like the hosts have done zero or less preparations to discuss some of their films and they ramble on at times about details I can't even begin to fathom the reasoning behind... but honestly, it works. Justin and Christine are a bit younger than I am so again there's some gaps between what they're nostalgic for and what I would be. But the podcasts are fun and still manage to bring back some memories. I especially liked the podcast about the Elijah Wood film "North" and another film "Motorama" I'd never heard of.

The Cult Film Club Podcast

The Cult Film Club podcast is one I actually discovered through Shezcrafti. It is the podcast that inevitably led me to discovering the Nerd Lunch podcast. Jaime Hood teams up once a month with Shawn Robare and Paxton Holley (the same "Pax" from Nerd Lunch above) to discuss a cool cult movie. But they don't just "discuss" a movie. They discuss their favorite parts, they discuss the terrible acting. They discuss where they have seen the actors in the cast before and since. They also recast the movie with their own casting choices. In other words it's not just some dry analysis of old weird movies you've never heard of... it's FUN with weird old movies you've never heard of. It's like those bizarrely in-depth discussions you used to get into with your friends at like... 3 o'clock in the morning about the Mortal Kombat movie.

I want to thank everyone who posted a comment with a McDonald's memory. I hope you all had as much fun dredging up old childhood memories of the Golden Arches as I had reading them all. Keep your eyes peeled on this blog in the near future because I'll be having another giveaway soon... this time I think it'll be Star Wars themed... but we'll see.
