But I'm also going to try and keep my Halloween countdown on track, so there will be a brief Halloween item posted at the end.

First of all I want to point out that the only real reason this blog exists at all is because of the League. It was Cool & Collected, and the other blogs in the League of Extraordinary Bloggers that inspired me to start this blog in the first place. I was looking for inspiration, and I guess I found it in the form of a bunch of pop-culture themed blogs that made me want my own pop-culture themed blog.
Remember how Anonymous solved the mystery of my very first post? Mysterious! |
But I wanted to be a little different. I wanted to go in a direction that might narrow my scope, but also focus my meanderings so I wasn't just all over the place all the time, talking about whatever popped into my head. I was a frequent shopper at Goodwill, and felt like I was reaping enough cool stuff that I could share my findings and maybe people would be interested.
Remember when I discovered my poster book was really 2 poster books? Exciting! |
It's a very young blog, some would say it is still in its infancy. I still struggle to be consistent with my posting, I struggle to find the "Voice" of the Goodwill Geek (not my real name), and I still struggle with the idea that this blog is or isn't worthy of time and attention (mine or yours). But I've been at it since July 24th. and with the exception of the time I spent without internet as I was moving to my new home, I've been pretty happy with my posting schedule, and the items I've had to share.
Remember Zoltar? Yeah you do. Popular! |
I've had some posts that really took off, like my buddy Zoltar there... and some real duds... like the horrible incident of the box disguised as a stack of books that I refuse to call a jewelry box...
I've participated in 8 League events so far (not counting this post, which makes 9) and I joined the Dork Horde because of its ties to the League. I also won a contest over at Memories of Toymorrow that I would never have even known about if I weren't a League member, who frequents the sites of other great League Members.

I also took part in the The Great Candy Corn Debate of 2012 with fellow Leaguers Reis, and Shezcrafti (read more about the debate through the links on their names). Things heated up pretty quickly. It was incendiary to say the least.
It's been a productive and fun just-under-three months for me... and I hope that I have the lasting power I need to make this blog a successful one. I appreciate all the support and new friends I've made as a part of the League, and as my alter-ego, the Goodwill Geek. The Geek loves all secondhand geekiness (and some first-hand stuff too of course) and he's always looking for a good deal. He's still got a lot to say, and I hope you guys stick around to read it.
Now check out what some of the other League members are posting as the State of their Sites:
- ShezCrafti tells us the history of not only her current blog, but all the other blogs to carry the proud name of ShezCrafti... and where the name came from in the first place.
- Hobgoblin over at the Monster Cafe tells us the aspirations he has for his growing blog.
- Rediscover the 80's celebrates its first birthday with a retrospective!
- Michael over at Memories of Toymorrow has his eyes firmly set on the future.

And finally, because this is still a part of my Halloween Countdown: Here's a spider-web candelabra I picked up for 1.99!
Spooky! |
I'll be back soon with more Ghoulish Goodwill Goodies. Until then, Happy Haunting!
Well, that's certainly a nice surprise. This post made my day--I'm so glad that the idea behind the League prompted you to start writing. I love reading about all your finds, and all your other posts as well.
ReplyDeleteThanks! I just remember finding sites like Flashlights Are Something To Eat and Memories of Toymorrow, and seeing the league topics. I wanted in... but I didn't want to just be some spazz. I needed proper motivation for the right kind of blog to consider myself worthy of posting every day. The blog still needs some ironing out, but I like working on it and improving it.
DeleteKeep up the good work!! I realy like your format...the other day I hit a Goodwill and got a small score I'll be postin....looks like your rubbing off on me!!
