Countdown to Halloween Day 1: Anthologies - John Carpenter's Body Bags

HAPPY OCTOBER!!! LET THE COUNTDOWN BEGIN! Every day this month I will be posting something Halloween-y to get keep us moving right along to the big day!

This October, I have decided I'm going to try a (semi) running theme. Not EVERY post I drop into the blog this month will fit with the theme... But I'm going for... most?

... At least half?

... Let's wait and see how prepared I am?

So I'm kicking things off with an old favorite anthology horror film of mine. This was something I originally watched on Showtime when it came out back in 1993.

John Carpenter Presents: Body Bags! I haven't watched this one since back in the day, but I have many a fond memory of the movie. I couldn't wait to see it, so I fired it up on YouTube and gave it a go.

SPOILERS IN FULL EFFECT from here on out, just a warning.

The framing story is actually incredibly clever in execution. John Carpenter himself is obviously having a blast hamming it up as "The Coroner" in a morgue. He is our disgusting Cryptkeeper in a blood-spattered smock. In the truest horror-host fashion, he's irreverent and ghoulish in equal measures. He takes us on a tour of the morgue, trying to find interesting deaths to share with the audience. This is fantastic. I love seeing John Carpenter in his disgusting makeup, channeling more than a little of Michael Keaton's Beetlejuice in his gallows humor delivery.

The first tale is "The Gas Station" and while it isn't especially original in concept or hard to predict in execution, it is fun. And fun is the name of the game for me on this one. We have a pretty good idea of who the menacing psycho is going to end up being from the get-go, so all of the atmosphere and build-up feels a little unnecessary... but that doesn't mean it isn't appreciated. The story has a little bit of space to breathe, and it doesn't feel too rushed. Frankly, I was in love with this story as soon as the location was revealed to be a gas station! The banality of the setting, plus the isolation, the time of night, the inescapable fact that this is a real situation that real people find themselves in... well it is an EXCELLENT situation to set a horror film in. Robert Carradine's gas station guy "Bill" is the very first character we're introduced to, and he plays it exactly like he's that guy you always meet on the first day at a new job. Kind of awkward, kind of helpful, not sure what to make of you yet. He doesn't do even ONE Revenge of the Nerds laugh though, which is kind of disappointing.

Alex Datcher plays Anne as a plucky heroine, and we're pulling for her from the start. She never overdoes it reaction wise, and she never seems stupid. She makes a couple of dumb mistakes like locking herself out of her booth and exploring a restroom alone, but we can almost, almost forgive her these as we can see ourselves having to deal with the same crap at our own jobs. Maybe not the EXACT situations, but similar ones. For the most part Anne reacts in realistic fashion to the events of the story. It never really feels insulting or contrived, which is nice. The REAL draw of "The Gas Station," however, has to be all the sweet, SWEET cameos! We have Wes Craven show up as a more-than-a-little creepy customer, who to a first time viewer must surely stand out as a prominent suspect destined to return later to menace again. And may I just say that Wes puts in an amazing performance here, given how little he had to work with? He's is creepy as HELL.

Then of course we have another horror pro, David Naughton (of An American Werewolf in London fame) putting in an appearance as the WAY-too-nice-NOT-to-be-a-serial-killer guy. His charm and his good looks and his charisma all scream, "He will wear your skin like a Halloween costume!!!" Because this is a horror movie and anything that appears to be overly nice, charming, cute, beautiful, wholesome, or just generally good in any kind of way is probably out to kill you. Except when it's a red herring (and even sometimes when it IS a red herring).

Of course, Sam Raimi's dead body is the real "Bill" and Robert Carradine is the killer, which was kind of obvious I guess. But how cool is it that Sam Raimi, Wes Craven, and David Naughton all decided to show up for this thing? Plus horror movie (and Carpenter film perennial) Buck Flower as a homeless guy! This is the stuff that makes "The Gas Station" by far the best of the three tales shared. They sort of blow their load in the first third, leaving us to wonder what could possible top this in the next segments. Answer: Nothing.

There are also various throwbacks to Halloween throughout, with references to Haddonfield, and one scene extremely reminiscent of Michael Myers, with our seemingly down-for-the-count killer sitting up in the out-of-focus background while our heroine is collecting herself in the foreground. Just great stuff all around. I wish the other two stories were a bit more in-line with this one so the whole thing could have been a classic all around.

The next story is my least favorite of the bunch. It feels completely out of place and asinine compared to the other two stories. It throws the whole thing off balance and completely derails the movie until we see Carpenter reappear as the Coroner later on. Honestly, Stacy Keach puts in a pretty solid performance as a guy worried about losing his hair. I actually really like Stacy Keach, and he's pretty great in his character... It's just that this character and this particular story should never have made it into this film.

He plays a guy going bald, and most of the story is all just build up, with him getting more and more desperate and more and more despondent with every moment. First off, they spent WAAAAY too much time getting us to where we needed to go. This segment seems to drag on FOREVER because the biggest portion of it deals with the various ridiculous lengths the character is willing to go to to try and either cover up his baldness, reverse his baldness, or argue about his baldness with his girlfriend, Sheena Easton. (Yes. THAT Sheena Easton.) The whole thing plays out more like a sitcom than a horror film. It's ridiculous. So what does this guy do? He goes in for a procedure at a clinic that can magically give him a full head of long, luscious Fabio-esque hair. Nothing suspicious about that right?

Sigh. Wrong. The hair is aliens. Brain eating aliens. And they take over the guys body, and he looks like this:

So that Deborah Harry (one of my favorite horror anthology alums!) can harvest the alien hair worms from his head. Ugh. It's just all so stupid. What is even more confusing is that when we're in the morgue before the story begins, the Coroner's introduction for this particular vignette doesn't seem to have ANYTHING to do with it. It really makes me wonder if this was the original intended segment for this part of the film. Everything about this story annoys me. From the set design to the horrible practical effects (see the giant play doh finger above) to the just really dumb idea. I mean, this plays out more like an episode of "Monsters" than a quality piece of filmmaking (even if it was made for TV).

The final story sees Luke Skywalker get an eye poked out in what begins as a PSA for not driving distractedly. Honestly, I think I would have liked this one a LOT better if there was a different story between "The Gas Station" and "Hair" segments. If they had kept to a serial killer theme, throughout, this one would have felt a lot less ridiculous. But coming back from Stacy Keach's ridiculous hair implants just to jump right into Mark Hammill's eye implant just makes them seem too similar. What was needed here was a more cohesive middle story. "Eye" isn't a bad short honestly, it just ends up feeling a bit tacked on.

Veteran Horror/sci-fi guys John Agar and Roger Corman show off their bedside manner before giving Hamill's Character, "Brent" the news that a new experimental eye transplant may give him his vision back. Taking a cue from the 1991 horror film "Body Parts" Brent's new eye used to belong to a necrophiliac serial killer! Wackiness ensues.

This story ends up pretty much the way you know it has to. There are some good, trippy sequences where the eye makes Brent hallucinate, and even makes him start to act on the impulses of its previous owner before he pops that sucker like a zit with some garden shears. Pretty much the whole message here is: Keep your eyes on the road while driving at night or else the spirit of a necrophiliac will inhabit your eye socket and make you try to kill your wife.

Or... something like that.

We then make one last jaunt to see Carpenter's Coroner character hop into a body bag of his own, revealing that he was a cadaver the whole time! Not a real shock mind you, but a fun little twist that makes the guy that much more endearing. Again, Had they dropped "Hair" from the line-up, and put something more similar to the "What's Cooking?" or "Undertaking Parlor" episodes of Tales From the Crypt in the mix. As it was, for all the macabre delight Carpenter seems to take in playing the Coroner in the framing story, we see very little of that bleed through to the stories, which is a shame.

I'm doing this countdown as a part of the official Countdown to Halloween, so be sure to pop over there and look and see who else is participating this year.

That's it for tonight kids! I'll be back very soon with some Gutwrenching Goodwill Goodies! So until then, Happy Haunting!

October Eve once Again!!!

Hey there kids! This is it! The blog has already undergone a few Halloween-y changes as I've re-dressed for the season! October starts tomorrow and so does my Countdown to Halloween! I get ridiculously excited for this spooktacular time of year, as you can see in 2012, 2013, and 2014, I always ring the October Eve bells, and this year is no different!

I've got a few fun ideas up my sleeve for Halloween this year, and one of the major focuses is going to be Horror Anthologies! That's right kids! I'll be looking at books, comics, TV shows and movies that all follow the horror movie anthology format!

I looooove me some anthology horror, as the stories are often fun-sized and colorful! Like momma always said: "Anthology Horror is like a box of chocolates. You never know if there's a razor blade in with the nougats, or a cockroach in the toffee!" Something like that.

There will be some appearances by this guy... Just... be prepared.

I can't think of a better time of year to enjoy short-form horror than Halloween. They really are one-bite-and-you're-DONE style storytelling, and so baaaad for your teeth.

There will of course be posts about my fun Halloween-themed Goodwill finds, and general Halloween posts where I talk about Halloween traditions, fun, and other stuff, but my plan is to post something every single night until Halloween itself! I'm going to try NOT taking a break during November this year and just keep blogging right up until December, when I will then plow right on into... well we DON'T have to talk about that just yet. I'm sure the department stores will be reminding us VERY soon what is coming up in December.

Meet Gaspar and McGillicutty.
They are having NONE of this Christmas in October BULLS**T.

Anywhoo... I'm participating in the official "Countdown to Halloween," run by the blog of the same name, and you'll notice I'm proudly sporting one of their boo-riffic badges in my sidebar again this year (you can scroll down and see the ghosts of countdowns past if you're curious). Be sure to click that link and check out all of the other countdown sites that are celebrating as well!

While I'm plugging stuff, I'll just remind you all that I'm also on Instagram and Twitter as @TheGoodwillGeek so if you want even more holiday hijinks be sure to follow me there, and be sure to "like" the Goodwill Hunting 4 Geeks Facebook page for updates on what's going on here, as well as at a bunch of my blogging buddies' blogs.

ALSO the podcast I am part-founder of, Eclectic Mayhem, just so happens to be putting out a Halloween episode this month! Imagine that! We'll be doing our very own Horror Anthology where each of your three creepy hosts will lead a different Halloween-themed conversation... so be sure to check that out when it drops around the middle of October! We're on iTunes so be sure to subscribe and leave us a review!

So sleep well tonight kids! Upon the morrow this blog will be ready for Halloween festivities to begin! October 31st isn't enough Halloween for me! I must have 31 days and no less of that old orange and black magic! So stay tuned! I'll be back with Halloween-Themed Goodwill Goodies soon enough, and until then Happy Hau... Hunting!

October Eve Has Come Again!

Well Boils and Ghouls, October Eve is upon us once more. Tomorrow, whatever parts of the internet are not already blazing up with odes to Halloween will join the fray and start counting down to that Hallowed Eve of Halloween.

This blog has been redressed for the occasion, and will be counting down. If you look over in the sidebar on the right you will notice my official badge as a Crypt Keeper for this year's count-down. This year we got Creatures from the Black Lagoons!!! So cool.

I've posted some pictures of my local Goodwill, also flaunting it's Halloween spirit. All in all... I'm excited!

I'll be making at least one post a day this October, featuring at least one Halloween-y item from Goodwill. On hop if that I'll still be doing the occasional regular posts as well, featuring other stuff I've bought second-hand. I may also interject a post here or there about some spooky topic or another. We'll see just what my energy level permits.

So it's October Eve. The wind is picking up... The leaves started changing just over the last few weeks... And there's something in the air that flies on raggedy black wings and smiles with a glowing orange grin.

Here we go folks. You're either all-in or you're OUT.

That's all I've got for tonight kiddies! I'll be back tomorrow with some Gruesome Goodwill Goodies! Until then, Happy Haunting!!!

Halloween Countdown Day 30: All Finished but the Screamin'

So I'll post some stuff tonight, and then I'll try to get pictures of our Halloween night on here before midnight tomorrow, and that's it! 31 (32 if you count October Eve, which I do) consecutive posts for m countdown! Somehow I seem to stick it out better for October than December, but then I'm also less busy in October. So here's some final stuff:

Meant to share these guys LAST year during my Countdown and I don't think I ever got around to it (can't find them on the blog at any rate) so here they are: a couple of Imperial Godzilla-esque toys! One of these, the purple-y blue one, is genuine vintage and belonged to my brother-in-law when he was a kid, although he has no date markings. The other I have no idea when it was manufactured, but it FEELS a lot newer, even though the date on it says 1986, I know they often don't change these dates when they reuse the molds. In fact, I don't know that these are even really genuinely meant to be Godzilla. I feel like they're more knock-off type "Fraud-zillas" that used to get sold cheaply on the bottom shelves of stores like Kay-Bee toys back when they were still around. I bought the green guy for .99 cents.

Found this interesting deck of "Gypsy Witch" fortune telling cards, which couldn't be less magical if they tried. They have almost nothing to do with anything resembling a Tarot card or any other system, but they're fun in and of themselves... sort of. Paid .99 cents for them. I'm always interested in seemingly random forms of fortune-telling. I don't believe in them exactly, I just find it interesting how people build systems of significance around random systems of numbers and patterns.

Some new additions to the Halloween Cemetary/Village shelf this year. All .99 cents apiece.

Doctor Freddy here is going to need a finger-blade transplant STAT! I plan on using a dremel to hollow out his fingers and then glue in some needles or something to make him the most dangerous toy I own. He was in a .99 cent grab-bag with a BUNCH of other figures, but most notably this lady:

A Queen Alien "wrist-watch" whose tail wraps around your wrist for what I can only imagine is the most AWKWARD watch-wearing experience ever. (The digital display is in her chest, and not visible at this angle). She's gone off to a good home, this little Lady here.

And finally, a set of cardboard coasters I picked up for a Dollar at Target. Not sure what I'll be using these for in years to come, but it sure as heck won't be as coasters. For now, they just sort of decorate the background of one of our Halloween shelves. Love the dapper skull in the top hat the most. I paid 1.00 for the set you see here.

Awww... Fraud-zillas hugging! What a great way to put the last nail in the coffin-lid of October! I know there's one more post to come, but let's face it, I'm practically dying of some sort of super-flu and I will barely be coherent after a night of chasing my kids around Trick-or-treating... so this may be the last legible sentiment on the blog for some time. I will definitely be taking a little blog break come November, but not for long, because PEOPLE... the packages from friends have been coming in, and I have stuff it would be downright RUDE not to blog about! Stuff from folks like Eric Stettmeier of Toyriffic, Miss M of Diary of a Dorkette, and CRPechonick of Geek Show Ink! So you do have that to look forward to!

Something's Coming By: Virginia Kroll

Smell of smoke from wood-burning stoves,
ripe red apples, crushed black cloves,
crunchy leaves of brown and gold,
pumpkins bigger than I can hold,
spookiest masks I've ever seen--
something's coming--
HALLOWEEN!

That's it for me tonight kids! I'll be back soon with more Gangrenous Goodwill Goodies! Until then, Happy Haunting!

Halloween Countdown Day 29: I've Been Waiting...

I've literally been waiting ALL season to post this one:

Here are the TWO not ONE but TWO strings of Halloween Orange Decorative lights we picked up at Goodwill for .99 cents!!! They are still sitting in this exact state (tangled as ANYTHING) and will most likely not be used until next season. But they work perfectly!

I have been waiting ALL season to post this one picture! Seriously! I think it's hilarious. And the closer I've gotten to Halloween without touching these lights... the funnier it feels to me. Anyway...

I'll be back soon with more Garishly-Orange Goodwill Goodies! Until then, Happy Haunting!

Halloween Countdown Day 28: Jack O' Lanterns!

This was actually supposed to be my post for last week's League of Extraordinary Bloggers photo challenge, but then I got horribly sick and we put off carving pumpkins until this week and boo-hoo I missed the deadline. But here we go anyway. I will say it's pretty unusual for my family to carve Jack O' Lanterns so close to Halloween. We usually have them up a week in advance at the very latest.

First up here is a handful of shots of my boys cleaning out their pumpkins. My older son (on the left) kept announcing how he has "gotten used to pumpkin guts" and was very excited he could do this task without dry-heaving this year.

My wife and daughter are both tired and sick with what I've got, so I didn't really get to man pictures of them worthy of the internet. Luckily these two kids were cute enough for the five of us.

What's he looking at in there?

My wife's obsession is with Sugar Skulls this year, and so she designed her Jack O' Lantern accordingly. She also made these for some friends:

Some sugar skull cupcakes. She's so darn-tootin' crafty!!!

So from left to right: My pumpkin, just sort of a generic Jack of all Jack O' Lanterns. Then m youngest son's, which is meant to look a little like Jack Skellington, but mostly just a "pooky garry keleton" (spooky scary skeleton) which he did not carve himself, but gave very specific instructions in broken toddler English. Then there's my wife's sugar skull pumpkin again. Really love how hers came out.

Next up we have my daughter's cat pumpkin and my middle son's "Trash Pack" Jack O' Lantern. (He's ALL about the Trash Pack this year, as you'll see when I post pictures of costumes). That is meant to be a trash can with ooze dripping from the lid, and the words "Trash Pack" etched in the front (that part's hard to see).

In one of my favorite pictures of '13, here he is admiring his Jack O' Lantern (Mom helped him with the carving, but they discussed the design ahead of time).

Here is youngest enjoying the 'pooky' Jack O' Lanterns.

And finally, the whole effect with good ol' Skully up in the window, overlooking the Jack O' Lanterns and the crunchy Fall leaves. Perfect.

That's it for me tonight kids! I'll be back soon with some Groaning Goodwill Goodies! Until then, Happy Haunting!

Halloween Countdown Day 27: Last of the Spooky Books!

This will most likely be my last Halloween book related post for the season so I'm tossing a bunch of stuff in here I just didn't have the time or inclination to include in earlier posts.

First up The Dancing Skeleton which tells the tale of an ornery old man who nobody likes when he's alive and everyone likes even LESS when he's dead. Because he stubbornly refuses to stay in his coffin! His poor widow (who didn't like him that much either) has to deal with her dead husband sitting in a rocking chair, refusing to get back in his grave. Luckily a gentleman suitor who happens to play the violin helps her find a solution... and this story is just great. It made it into our regular rotation just this year and makes for a great Halloween tale. It's not really scary at all except for the inclusion of the skeleton, and my kids laughed when the story was resolved at the end. I paid .99 cents for this one.

I made it through the first story in this book before setting it aside. It was kind of disturbing. I've read one anthology of stories written by Ramsey Campbell in the past, and his stories are pretty scary. These stories are supposedly ones that he collected into an anthology because they scared him. I kind of think that statement may be true. .99 cents.

This is one of those dry-looking books that looks like it came out in the 60's or 70's (I didn't bother to look at the publishing date before writing this, so be my guest...) but I've suddenly found myself in the mood to check out more and more books like that in recent times. So finding this for 1.99 was pretty fun! I mean, look at that cover alone! Facing off against that skeletal apparition with crucifix in hand... classic horror!

I did not know that there was a series of licensed Universal Monsters novels. Did you? I didn't find any more of the series kicking around when I found this, The Devil's Night was a must-have. Looking it up on Amazon later, I discovered mixed reviews, especially for the sequel to this book, Devil's Brood. Should be interesting to see if it is any kind of satisfying read. Maybe I'll set it aside for next year's Halloween read pile.

Couple of younger books here that I plan on sharing with my boys. The Time Spies: Rider in the Night book is a chapter book, but my older son is almost ready to start having those read to him. And it features the Headless Horseman!!! I couldn't resist that if I WANTED to. The Ghost with the Halloween Hiccups is a perfect read-aloud book for them right now, and they loved it!

Finally, here's a great Halloween pop-up book I just recently found: A Visit to the Haunted House. It's cute and was in pretty decent shape!

The menace of the haunted house was slightly down-played by the kitten book-plate on the first page... but the kitten's eyes appear to follow you around the room so the effect is still quite haunting.

There's a lot more to this book, but the three pages I feature here are the most impressive of the pop-up pages. Most of the others are of the "pull the tab" or "slide this thing up and down" variety and so don't demonstrate well in photographs anyway.

Well that's it for tonight kids!!! Halloween night is only a few more days away! In some ways I'll be happy to have the countdown done with... but in even more ways I'll be sad that the Halloween season is over. It's my favorite time of the year, and a time of year when I really try to kick everything into high-gear reading, viewing, listening, and collecting-wise when it comes to spookiness, horror, and Halloween.

I'll be back soon with more Grody Goodwill Goodies! Until then, Happy Haunting!
