Payday Friday 10-28 Part 2

All right back to the Payday Friday adventures!!! This is part two of a post I started back here. It was a mega payday Friday filled with two days and three stores. It was a wild bacchanalistic orgy of Goodwill shopping. Well, there's a sentence I bet you never thought you'd read...

As I mentioned last time, there was some last-minute Halloween shopping happening that day as well. Here's a little green Halloween Troll doll I found in a grab-bag with some other great stuff (shown after the jump). I don't usually care about Troll dolls one way or another... but this guy's okay. I think he's meant to be a Frankenstein's monster Troll... but he's also throwing off some major zombie vibes. He's the exact kind of balance between cute and Halloween-y that I tend to enjoy. The grab-bag he came out of cost me .99 cents, so any additional Troll reservations I may have had disappeared when I saw the additional contents of the bag.

See More After the Jump!

In the vintage Sesame Street kid's book category, there are four more books in addition to the Pop-Up book I featured last time (bottom left). There's The Sesame Street Bedtime Storybook, I Can Do It Myself, The Sesame Street Pet Show, and Farmer Grover. These books were all .99 cents a piece. I remember owning most of these as a kid, too. Nostalgia power!

Next up is an advance reader's copy of a novel titled Dust City by Robert Paul Weston. It looks interesting, and is a weird modern take on the Big Bad Wolf. I'm willing to give it a try for .99 cents... which is what it was. And the My Teacher is an Alien collection, with all four of Bruce Coville's books in it had to come home. Bruce Coville is not the best writer for young adults, but he has a lot of great ideas and series that my daughter just loves. So I thought we'd check him out. Coville's The Monster's Ring is an excellent read for Halloween. He's like a slightly more talented R.L. Stein, and he doesn't just write soft-core horror books for kids. This collection of 4 books was 2.99.

This Strawberry Shortcake's Cooking Fun I picked up for .99 cents. It's from 1980, and my wife is really the S.S. fan, not me. But I am keeping it in with the vintage kid's book collection.

Here's another toy from the Troll doll grab-bag I mentioned above. It's from the Pirates of the Caribbean 2 Happy Meal premiums series.

This was in the same grab-bag with the other toys. It's from the first Pirates of the Caribbean Happy Meal premiums series. This is the cutest little Skeleton Pirate I have ever seen! Actually all of those toys from that series were pretty kick-ass:

I have one of the telescopes kicking around somewhere too. I would happily collect the inflatable sword, the little stuffed Jack Sparrow, the Skull 8-Ball, and the rest.

Here's the last little dude from the .99 cent grab-bag that had the pirates and the Troll in it. He's pretty cute. I have no idea what he is (or they are I guess) from... but he's some sort of bug or snake hiding in a suit with some buddies. When you roll the base along, the eyes peep out through the holes and disappear. He's packed away now, so I can't even see what year he was made. Any cartoon savvy readers know who he is?
EDIT TO ADD: Never mind! He's from the 1996 Space Jams Happy meal series. That's too bad. I like him a lot less now, just by association.

And one of my favorite purchases of the weekend was this pretty Halloween-y Mars Attacks figure. He's about 9 inches tall (wish I'd taken a picture for scale, but believe me, he's pretty big) and he takes batteries, but I haven't changed them out yet to see if he still does whatever he's supposed to do. As you can see he's in kind of rough shape... he has no accessories, his cape has paint transfer stains from some other toy and it has broken off from where it attaches to the front of his suit, and also the dome over his head is missing. But I loved him at first sight, and I want to try and see if I can fix him up. The paint stains should come off fairly well with some persuasion, and the cape can be reattached with glue, or by drilling out the holes where it was originally attached, and re-pegging it in. Hopefully new batteries will get him making noise (and I think his head glows) again... but the clear plastic dome helmet I just don't know if I can replace. Anyone have any ideas? He still looks great without it... but I really want to figure out a way to give him a new one.

Anywhoo... That's it for tonight's post. I'll be back soon with some more gratuitous Goodwill Goodies. Until then, Happy Hunting!

  2. I was going to say that toy looked an awful lot like the Nerdlucks from Space Jam but I guess you figured it out. I only knew that because I loathe that movie.
